Die überlieferten Briefe sind an sixty five verschiedene Adressaten gerichtet. Nachgewiesen werden außerdem 274 erschlossene Briefe. Von allen Briefen, die Goethe von November 1775 bis Ende 1779 geschrieben hat, gelten nur wenige alten Freunden wie Lavater, Merck, Johanna Fahlmer, dem Ehepaar Kestner oder Augusta zu Stolberg. Dafür beginnen 1775/76 bedeutende Korrespondenzen, darunter die mit Herzog Carl August und vor allem mit Charlotte von Stein, an die Goethe in den folgenden 10 Jahren so häufig wie an keine andere individual geschrieben hat. Zwei Drittel aller im Band enthaltenen Briefe sind an sie gerichtet. In ihnen entfaltet sich Goethes wichtigste persönliche Beziehung des ersten Weimarer Jahrzehnts. Nachgewiesen werden auch sämtliche Beilagen zu Goethes Briefen, darunter Zeichnungen, die dem textual content als Faksimiles beigegeben sind. Der Kommentar wird ergänzt durch zahlreiche Dokumente wie z.
