Quarantine

What would happen in you found yourself trapped in quarantined building with people that were trying to kill you? This question is answered in the bloody and thrilling horror movie Quarantine.

Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter) is a TV reporter who is assigned to cover the night shift of some Los Angeles firefighters, along with her cameraman, Scott (Steve Harris). At first, it seems like it is just going to be an ordinary night at the firehouse with the men that she is shadowing, Jake (Jay Hernandez) and Fletch (Johnathon Schaech). They eat classic firehouse food and even play a friendly game of basketball. Everything is going fine until they get a 911 call to a small apartment building.

When they arrive, there are police officers who also responded to the call of horrific screams coming from Mrs. Espinoza’s (Jeannie Epper) apartment. When they get there, she looks like a zombie and has blood dripping down her nightgown. She attacks a police office by taking a chunk out of his neck. The police officers and firefighters get everyone out of their apartments and downstairs into the lobby. A few minutes later, Fletch takes a few story swan drive and crashes to the ground. The firefighters and news crew attempt to leave, but the building has been quarantined by the CDC for a biochemical or nuclear hazard.

Fighting and panicking occur as the residents realize that they are going to be stuck in the building. As time goes on, the residents who have been bitten by infected people also become increasingly violent. It is a race to stay alive until those trapped inside are able to leave the building. When everything is over with, the camera crew’s footage is the only evidence of that night.

With all of the bloody violence and terror, Quarantine is sure to make anyone’s heart race. The plot is innovative, even though a remake of the Spanish horror film [REC], and never seems drawn out. The acting is overshadowed by the screaming and gore, but is still average. The movie wasn’t as scary as I had anticipated so die-hard horror fans may not be overly impressed, but is perfect if you want to let out a few good screams.

I give it three pints of blood out of five.
