The Love Guru |
| |
Simply stated in the same childish manner that most of the “The Love Guru’s” gags are attempted, “The Love Guru is poo poo.”
During his tenure in the 1980’s on the NBC late night comedy show, “Saturday Night Live,” in the early 1990’s as part of the Wayne’s World franchise, and later with the creation of the campy but beloved Austin Powers character, comedian Mike Myers was perhaps the hippest, young commodity in entertainment.
Fast forward ten years to the latest Myers attempt at comedy, “The Love Guru,” and the same old bodily functions, double entendres, and sight gags have grown tired, old, and non-relevant to the new generation of movie-going crowds.
At its base level, “The Love Guru” is nothing more than all the costumes and gags that didn’t make it into the final cut of any of the Austin Powers or Wayne’s World films. After witnessing a talent like Myers result to such farce is more sad than humorous.
Myers plays Austin Powers…er…check that, I mean Guru Pitka “the world’s second best guru!” He’s called in by the owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, played by Jessica Alba, to help reconcile the relationship between star player Darren Roanoke and his wife who has left him for a rival hockey player portrayed by Justin Timberlake.
Whereas Wayne Campbell was innocently cute and Austin Powers was lost in time, Love Guru Pitka comes off as just creepy. Why would someone who is trying to rival the real-life Deepak Chopra be in need of intense therapy himself for incessant innuendo and repressed perversions? Actually, perhaps that’s the answer in a nutshell. “Oh, look at me; I’m in a nutshell!”
In the movie “Good Luck Chuck”, Alba seemed to find her stride in a comedic role that she is way too beautiful to portray. Alba's ability to make fun of herself made her character work in that movie. In “Guru,” Alba seems awkward, distracted, and disinterested throughout.
Mike Myers proves one can’t go home again and earns a weak 2 out of 5 love beads for “The Love Guru.”
