How to Stop a Wedding |
| |
We have all seen it in the movies, the bride is standing at the alter with a man who she does not love, yet she is going to marry, and just as she’s about to say I do, her real lover breaks through the doors and cries, “stop the wedding!” Then after declaring his love for her, the bride throws down her bouquet and the two run down the aisle and through the doors and off into forever. Well, that’s how it goes in the movies.
But life does imitate art and sometime and in some cases, weddings need to be stopped. But have you ever thought about how to do it? And what if it goes horribly wrong?
The hope is that you never need to stop a wedding, but if you do, consider the following tips to help you do it, and to help you make an escape.
Have the facts. If you’re going to stop the wedding you need to know where it is and at what time everything is going to happen. You want to be exactly on time for this one.
Pick your spot. If you’re going to stop a wedding you need to pick a good place during the ceremony. You want to be close enough to the bride and groom but you also want to be close to an exit, in case things get ugly fast. In addition, you want to choose a place that adds to the drama of the event. Consider the back row of the church. That will allow you to enter the aisle, or retreat out the door if necessary.
Plan your speech. If you’re going to stop a wedding, you better know what you’re going to say ahead of time. Basically, this is the most important speech of your life, so you better make it a good one. Make sure you include why the marriage can’t continue and if love is your motivation, make sure you make a through explanation of your love and desire.
Wait for the right moment. Of course every wedding has that moment when the priest ask if there is anyone who objects to the marriage. That is your cue. Stand up and make your case. But remember, brevity is key. You’ll have a few minutes to say anything as the most people will be too shocked to even react, but the longer you go on, the longer the shock will wear off. What for your cue and state your case.
Think like a bank robber. What I mean is robbing a bank is one thing, getting away is something else. Stopping a wedding is like that. Just because you said what you had to say that’s only part of it. Now you need to get away before angry family members begin to descend on you. Whether you’re all alone or joined by your lover, have a good escape route planned and perhaps a car waiting to make a quick escape. Things could go bad or they could go good, either way, you’re probably going to want to get out of there in a hurry.
