Same Sex Wedding Planning

Slowly but surly the individual States of the United Sates are moving to not only recognize same sex marriages, but to legally permit and perform same sex marriages, and to grant all the privileges and rights provided to heterosexual marriages. Although same sex marriage still has its opponents, it is becoming very clear to a majority of the population that we cannot deny rights to citizens based on sexual orientation.

So what exactly is involved in planning a same sex wedding?

It shouldn’t shock you to learn that a same sex wedding requires the same planning as a heterosexual wedding does. Perhaps the titles of the wedding party may change, but the roles are the same, as is the need for careful consideration and planning to make sure the special day goes just as planned.

Same sex couples looking for information on planning their wedding don’t have to look far, because a same sex marriage is identical to a heterosexual wedding in everyway.

Where a same sex wedding deviates, unfortunately is in the prejudices that the marring couple will encounter. Same sex couple should expect that a small percentage of vendors and venues will refuse to do business with a same sex couple. That is unfortunate but it should be expected.

The best thing a same sex couple can do when encountering prejudice from a vendor or venue is to move. Just like a heterosexual marrying couple, you want to be comfortable with the people you work with and if you get the sense that there is a hesitation to work with a same sex couple, it is probably best to find another business to help you with your wedding. Don’t wait until the day of the wedding to learn you have a vendor who is suddenly feeling an over exaggerated sense of religious or moral duty to deny you service at the moment they are most needed. In short; know your vendors and make sure they have no problem working with a same sex couple.

Hopefully, someday soon, same sex couples won’t have to worry about prejudice when planning a wedding, but in the short term, even after same sex marriage becomes law of the land, prejudice will still exist. But prejudice can’t stop a loving couple from getting married and having a wonderful life together, nor should it.
