| |
The Voss Family, Artists of American Sporting Life, an exhibition organized by the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, New York, features over 85 works of art (oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, prints, and sculptures) by members of the Voss family on loan from six museums and 28 private lenders.
The exhibition travels to the Maryland Historical Society this spring from April 11 to July 27, 2008, then moves on to the National Sporting Library in Middleburg, Virginia, for the fall and winter of 2008. Guest curator Ms. Gregory R. Weidman has written an accompanying catalogue.
Members of the Voss family had been horsemen in Maryland for generations when William Voss and his wife, Caroline Neilson Voss, moved to Long Island where they raised their artistically gifted children. The siblings visited Maryland throughout their lives, and all eventually settled here.
Franklin B. Voss (1880-1953) was the leading American equestrian artist of his day. He received over 600 commissions, many from premier racing families, to paint such racing greats as Man o' War, Sir Barton, Equipoise, Seabiscuit, War Admiral, Citation, and Whirlaway, all of whom are represented in the exhibit.
He and other family members are also renowned for sporting paintings depicting steeplechasing, foxhunting, coaching, polo, and other field sports.
Also featured are works by Jessie Voss Lewis (1876-1962); Edward Somerville Voss (1883-1969); and Edward’s wife, Elsa Horne Voss (1895-1982). The painting by Franklin B. Voss shown above is of Margaret Cottman O’Callaghan side-saddle on “Tom Fool” (1929).
The Voss Family, Artists of American Sporting Life ends July 27, 2008.
