Myspace & Face Book: How Thirty Something’s are Keeping in Touch By: Jonathan Bille |
| |
For a lot of us, Myspace and Face Book seemed to be something that was popular with the kids, but not something that got a lot of use by the parents of those kids or adults in general. Well, the times they are a changing.
When I first got an email from a friend asking me to check out his Myspace page my first thought was, “why?” If I wanted to talk to him, I could just pick up the phone and call him, why would I need or want to go his Myspace page, but I went and checked it out anyway.
To my surprise, my friend’s Myspace page isn’t just a collection and display of his interests, but rather it is a communication hub for a lot of our old friends who had long since gone their separate ways, now keeping in touch through message posts on my friend’s and others pages.
I was amazed at the number of our old friends who we’re stopping by to say hello and to catch up with everybody. That’s when it stuck me.
These social networking sites aren’t as much about meeting new people as much as they are about finding old friends who have long since moved on and moved away.
There at one website were friends from early childhood, the teen years, and the college years. Most of whom I had either forgot about or had been wondering about.
So as unlikely as it seemed perhaps a few month ago, I now have my own MySpace page, and almost like magic, the old friends are appearing one at a time. And because it is a social networking platform, getting in touch with one old friend, leads to getting in touch with another old friend and so on.
If you have never used MySpace or Face Book I recommend giving them a try. Use the friend finder and see if anyone you know may have their own page.
If you’re old and technically challenged like I am, the operating paradigm of these sites might at first seem complex and strange, but after a short time, you’ll be posting like a pro.
Boiled down, Myspace and Facebook are a great way to keep in touch with old and new friends. And think of how impressed the kids will be when you tell them to check out the blog you just posted on your homepage.
