Where McCain is missing on his Iraq message

Where McCain is missing on his Iraq messageIf Republicans are going to win the White House this November John McCain is going to have to change his message to fall in line with where the large majority of Americans are at. Saying things like it’s not important when troops come home from Iraq is going to cost him not only independent votes but Republican votes as well.

Evoking words like surrender isn’t motivating anyone to sign on for any more time in Iraq. The military has done its job. There is nothing left there for them to do but to act as a police force doing a job the Iraqis are unwilling to do.

Iraq is a mess, there’s no doubt about it, but keeping our troops there isn’t going to solve the problems now facing that country. How does keeping our forces there bring together three separate factions that are diametrically opposed to each other? Will US guns and bombs convince Sunni and Shi’ah to end hostility and make peace? Saddam Hussein kept the peace through brutal, malicious and barbaric tactics, is that our plan? To end violence with overwhelming force and violence?

Promising to stay in Iraq, (until victory?) is cutting McCain off from the majority opinion. Recent polls show that 70% percent of Americans want to get out of Iraq now and that 70% of Iraqi want us to leave now, so why are we staying? Well, you know why were staying, because the Iraqi Parliament refuses to sign the oil sharing agreement that hands over the majority of their oil to foreign companies.

And there’s McCain out talking about victory and surrender, when the truth is that Iraq is a business deal that has gone wrong. And McCain is now looking like a puppet for the oil companies trying to prolong the conflict just long enough to get that oil sharing agreement.

Come on John, you’re a military man who knows how to solve the Iraq mess. Tell Exxon and the rest of the group there isn’t going to be any oil sharing agreement, split Iraq into three sections, give each faction a section and bring our men and women home. Deliver that message and win the White House, stay with the current message and enjoy your retirement.
