I’m probably one of the few people out there who knew, or at least assume, that these guys took their band moniker from a professional wrestling move, but I digress.

Oh well, wrestling is fake, and this is far from it.

Project 3 – Background Black could be summed up in one phrase – quick and to the point. That’s exactly what this album is. It’s sort of like a squash match in wrestling, where one guy just kicks his opponent’s ass swiftly. It’s effective; six tracks, 17 minutes, and 6:30 minutes of those come in the song, 2.27.

The Boise, Idaho product isn’t what it seems like. If you didn’t know they were from Boise, you’d think they hailed from the Big Apple due to their feverishly trademark NYC hardcore sound. Regardless of where they are from, as long as they are rolling with Project 3 – Background Black, they are sure to be inciting circle pits. It’s fast, it’s heavy and it’s uncompromising. Seriously, what else would you want from a hardcore record. Enzugiri showcase the fact that they have a good grasp of hardcore music with Controversy Killed the Cat, which is the most well-rounded track of the offering through speedy, bludgeoning guitars, quality breakdowns, and just general all-around thrashing. Having 30 Friends Doesn’t Make Your Band Good reminds me of the Descendents 34 second classic Coffee Mug, and the very gloomy, impending doom of 2.27 finishes off the record efficiently.

Sure the album plays fast, but you will be punching floors and walls before long. You pretty much know what you’re getting with Project 3 – Background Black, and while it isn’t anything special or different overall, it still is another good hardcore record to sink your teeth into.
