Sludge metal stoner rock. Those four words were used to describe this album to me. Think of it a little clearer, and in this way; a somewhat distorted, much more sludgy version of Pelican, but with a whole lot less breakdowns. But rest assure, Heibarger’s self-titled release doesn’t mess around.
The vocals are on and off again, but aren’t the featured act of this record, or the band for that matter. The music is what is key here. It is gritty and dirty, and the best way to describe it just might be a wall of sound. This record is a force, a sonic slap in the face of the listener, and for sure, there is no way to expect this type of sound. It’s sort of like a guessing game of sorts. You don’t know when the vocals are coming; you don’t know when the guitars are going to cut, and so on and so forth.
Heibarger want you to concentrate purely on the music. This isn’t emo, there is no quip lyrical poetry, there is no tongue-in-cheek song titles, none of that. If you don’t like fuzz rock, don’t listen. The guitars are towering, the drumming is saturated, and the overall sound you get is nothing short of immense and mountainous.
For the musically unenlightened, this album isn’t for you. If you rely on a frontman or a vocalist to guide your ears, first off, you don’t appreciate music, and secondly, you are missing out of a lot of things going on in song.
This album is enjoyable, but you might get lost in its journey.
