We all know that we should get at least an hour or two of exercise each day to maintain good health and to keep looking great, but how few of us actually get the time to commit to that kind of an exercise schedule. Well there is some good news for those of us who may feel we’re not getting in as much exercise as we need.
Housework counts as exercise. That’s right; many of the household tasks that we perform everyday count as good exercise, and with a little added effort, those chores can be a serious calorie burning contribution to our good health. Consider the following:
Vacuuming the floor. Pushing the vacuum around isn’t anyone’s favorite activity, but did you know you can burn up to 240 calories an hour vacuuming. Add some light calisthenics or jogging in place to your vacuuming and you could be burning up to 500 calories as hour.
Yard work. It seems that there is something to be done in the yard everyday. Whether it’s mowing the lawn, raking, or digging in the garden, the yard work seems to never end. The silver lining is that yard work packs a calorie burning punch. Working in the yard at an average pace can burn around 300 calories an hour. Turn up the music and dance while you work and you could be burning as many as 650 calories an hour.
Washing windows. Even the maid doesn’t want to wash the windows, but if she knew she could be burning 200 calories an hour doing it, it might change her mind. Jog in place while washing the windows and burn around 380 calories an hour, oh and you also get great looking windows at the same time.
We could keep running through more household tasks but I think you are getting the picture. The idea is not only that your getting some good exercise already but by adding a little more physical movement to your household work, you can turn your boring daily tasks into a calorie burning power workout. Oh and you also get a nice clean home in the process. What else could you ask for?
