 Everybody has heard of the incredibly successful movie animation company Pixar, responsible for such mega hits as “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo” and “Ratatouille.” A new book, “The Pixar Touch,” by David A. Price, goes in depth to tell the story of Pixar, their ups and downs and how they became a tour de force in the movie making business.
Pixar is an animation studio that has pioneered many of the innovations used in modern movie making. Many of the special effect houses such as Industrial Light and Magic responsible for such hits as “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” and “The Chronicles of Narnia,” use Pixar’s software to create the out of this world characters and places that have captured the imagination of audiences all over the world.
Price looks closely at this pioneering giant to detail their humble beginnings, struggles and eventual rise to the top of the animation industry. A story that doesn’t go quite as expected. For instance, how many know that it was Pixar, not Apple that made Steve Jobs a billionaire? Jobs purchased Pixar from Lucasfilms for $5 million in 1986. In 1995, one week after the release of “Toy Story,” Pixar went public and Job’s stock shot up to a value of $1.1 billion.

Price, known for his previous work, “Love and Hate in Jamestown,” about early America, applies the same type of investigative and story telling techniques to “The Pixar Story,” making it not only filled with facts, but also a well constructed, well though out and entertaining read.
For Price, “The Pixar Story,” is a story about journeys into the unknown and unexplored territories. It is the journey that makes the drama, and it is the drama that makes, “The Pixar Story” a must read for fans of the films and those who can appreciate the success enjoyed by a start-up company that has risen to the top of their industry.
