The Feelings Mutual - Self-Titled EP

The Feelings MutualChances are that each and every one of you has heard the phase ‘the feelings mutual’ at some point in your life. Now, starting out with a cliché aside, we all have a fairly safe understanding of just what that phrase means, right? OK, thinking of it?

Now go ahead and forget it, because we’re not talking about some done-to-death phrase here, we are talking about something a little fresher, like the band and the debut EP of the same name.

Sure they share their name with something we all have probably said before, but I doubt that all of you have heard what they are doing musically before. They aren’t a household name, or out there reinventing the wheel or anything like that, but still, you get my point.

In my opinion, the Feelings Mutual should concentrate on writing songs more akin to Soul Korea and Sleep; dreary but impassioned, all-the-while believable marches that show a smarter side of the bands abilities. Songs like the record opening Monolith work, but fails to leave the lasting affect the two afore mentioned tracks indeed do. Black Cloud Dream comes off as a filler track when compared to the rest, and Ring Me Out is the best sing-a-long of the offering. Sleep rounds things out and definitely is the strongest track of the EP. The Feelings Mutual just has a knack for writing better ballads than bouncy pop songs, but one thing is true for sure, these Cali boys can write sturdy hooks.

With their sunny pop infused take on West Coast indie, the Feelings Mutual impress with some of their self titled debut EP, then just sort of hang around with the rest. The record is good, not great, but comes off as a nice representation of what the band is capable of overall.
