Maximize Your Closet Space

Maximizing your closet space means getting the most out of the room in your closet you have so you can store more. There are several tricks you can do to maximize your closet space and also make your closet accessibility convenient.

The marketplace is full of organizers and accessories that fit any budget. All you have to decide is what needs to be done and how much money you want to spend. This is also something you can do yourself, or hire a contractor or a closet organizer company to do it for you.

If you intend to maximize your closet space on your own, here are some ways you can do it. First, we’ll look at the goals you’ll want to set and what types of products are available for you to use to reach those goals.

Goal: Increase Hanging Space
One of the easiest ways to add hanging space to your closet, especially if your closet has a single bar all around in it, is to remove some of the single bar and replace it with double bars, one set higher on the wall, at about 7 feet, and the second set below it about halfway up the wall, somewhere around 3 ½ to 4 feet. Single bars are great for longer items like pants, dresses and skirts, but they leave empty space below the shirts and other shorter items. Adding double hanging bars doubles your space for hanging shorter items and will leave you with room to add other storage items as well.

Goal: Increase Number of Shelves
Once you’ve divided up where your new hanging space will be, add shelves. Place shelves in between the single and double hanging spaces, or on another wall of your closet. A corner can be used for corner shelves or straight shelves. Even a narrow space for shelves will store something, particularly shoes.

Wire Racks
Wire racks are an inexpensive product available for creating a closet organizing system. You can buy a kit that comes with the basic pieces to fit closets of various size ranges or you can buy pieces individually for a completely customized closet. Wire racks come with installation guidelines and are not difficult to install on your own if you follow the guidelines.

Wood Storage Components
Similar to wire racks, wood storage components are available in kits or in separate pieces that you can buy for a customized fit. Wood components included shelves, cabinets and drawers and give a finished, sophisticated look to any closet. This type of a closet is more expensive than a wire rack system but the final look will be worth it.

Custom Built
If your closet is a challenge due to odd shapes and corners, you may not be able to buy some of the pre-made systems like wire racks or wood storage components available in stores. If this is the case and you have a handyman in the family, don’t be afraid to design your own closet organizer and make it a do-it-yourself project.

Here are some additional tips and recommendations to get the most out of your closet space:

  • Measure, measure, measure: before you start shopping, measure your closet. You’ll want the width and height of each wall and total floor space.
  • Small accessory organizers: there are many products on the markets to condense accessories like belts, hats, bags and shoes into small spaces. Some come in the form or hangers or can be mounted to the wall. Set aside spaces for these, whether on an empty wall, or incorporated into a shelving unit.
  • Cedar accessories: cedar repels moths and other insects that are attracted to fibers in clothes and will eat holes through them. A closet can be built of cedar but that is expensive. For a more economical way to have a “cedar closet,” you can buy cedar hangers, shelf and drawer liners, and balls to repel the pests.
  • Wall Mirror: place a full-length mirror on an empty wall space in your closet.
  • Island: if you have a wide walk-in closet, place an island in the middle full of shelves and drawers. The top can be used like a dressing table.
  • Baskets and decorative boxes: accessorize your closet organizer with baskets and decorative boxes. Place these on shelves to hold loose items like hats and gloves, or for folded clothes so you don’t pull everything off the shelf when you want one item.
  • Clear doors: if you want to place doors over shelves (making cabinets) use clear acrylic panels. Two benefits of the clear doors will keep your items from falling off the shelves and allow you to view what’s on each shelf.
  • Corners: don’t leave corners out. Look for hanging bars that can be used in corners or shelving built for corners.
