Anxiety and You: You can Relax! By: Jonathan Bille |
| |
Anxiety is a fairly common problem that affects people of all ages. Although it is generally believed to affect more women than men, anxiety is a huge problem for both the sexes. Anxiety as a disorder can be either acute or chronic.
With acute anxiety, episodes are commonly known as panic attacks, which is an instance where the body’s “Fight or Flight” instinct occurs at inappropriate times. Acute anxiety attacks are usually short and fairly intense. Such attacks can occur at any time, night or day, and can last for anywhere from a few seconds to up to a half an hour. These attacks can be so intense that it is not unusual for a person suffering from a panic attack to believe that they are having a heart attack.
Chronic anxiety is much more mild and general form of the disorder. With chronic anxiety, the panic feeling is more a vague sense of panic that occurs more of the time. Although the levels of panic never reach the intense level as with acute anxiety, sufferers may feel chronic uneasiness, particularly in the presence of other people.
Anxiety disorder is generally believed to be hereditary because it has been proven to run in families, but some cases may be linked to a harmless abnormality of heart function.
If you suffer from anxiety, consider some of the following to help control your symptoms:
• Learn to breathe. When experiencing an attack, control your breathing by inhaling for 5 seconds and exhaling for 5 seconds in a controlled manor. Keep the breathing pace regular without gaps between breaths.
• Learn some relaxation techniques. Being able to consciously get yourself to relax will help minimize the intensity and duration of panic attacks.
• Get in the exercise habit. Exercising regularly has provided a notable improvement in anxiety symptoms in most people.
• Get some sleep. Being well rested will help minimize anxiety symptoms.
• Eliminate food products with caffeine and sugar.
• Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables.
• Start a vitamin regiment that includes a multi-vitamin, Vitamin C, B complex, Calcium and Magnesium, and herbal products like ginkgo biloba and milk thistle.
Anxiety can be frightening. It is very important to always remember that the anxiety you feel is not real or at the least is artificially magnified. When suffering from an anxiety attack, just remind yourself that you are okay, and that the feeling will soon pass.
