Stars Turn Out To Celebrate Mandela's 90th Birthday
While his birthday is still a few weeks away, Nelson Mandela's friends in England are getting a jumpstart on the festivities honoring the former South African leader. London's Hyde Park was transformed on Friday into the scene of a star-studded outdoor concert, featuring performances by Leona Lewis, Amy Winehouse, Annie Lennox, and Queen with Paul Rodgers and many others. The concert capped a weeklong birthday bash for the freedom icon who turns 90 on July 18th. Hosted by Hollywood actor Will Smith, the concert coincided with the 20th anniversary of London's Free Mandela concert which called for his release from prison. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the 46664 charity, an AIDS charity named for the prison number Mandela wore while imprisoned during South Africa's apartheid regime. Mandela spent 27 years behind bars before his release in February 1990.
