Gary Glitter Loses His Brick
Gary Glitter's brick is no longer on the Cavern Club's "Wall of Fame." Bill Heckle, spokesman and co-owner of the legendary Liverpool, England venue, tells the "Liverpool Echo" he disagrees with removing the brick, noting the Wall, quote, "is supposed to be an historical record and facts should not be censored -- is anyone going to censor the Guinness Book of Records?" He says he feels the situation, quote, "has been blown out of all proportion," and adds, "We decided to give in and avoid all the bad publicity." The Cavern Club "Wall of Fame" includes the names of artists who played on the famed stage from 1957 and 1973. In defending the Glitter brick last week, Heckle noted that the disgraced '70s glam rocker performed at the Cavern, which is simply a fact and they cannot change the past. Club owners also removed the brick of singer Jonathan King, who was imprisoned for child sex abuse in 2001. According to the BBC, the Cavern Club "Wall of Fame" now also contains a plaque noting that Glitter and King performed at the Cavern, but they don't have bricks in their honor.
